Behind The Smiles: The Darius Roberts Foundation
Kristi Roberts is the Founder and CEO of Behind The Smiles: The Darius Roberts Foundation, a nonprofit organization created in honor of her son, Darius “Donny Marvo” Roberts, who passed away in January 2023.
In the face of unimaginable loss, Kristi turned her pain into purpose. She is committed to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, creating safe spaces for open and honest conversations especially among young adults and within the African American community.
Kristi is a passionate advocate for those who may be suffering in silence. Through her leadership, the foundation provides access to practical tools, meaningful resources, and supportive opportunities that empower individuals to prioritize their mental and emotional well-being. She believes in a holistic approach to healing, incorporating outlets such as art, music, journaling, poetry, and fitness as powerful forms of therapy.
In November 2023, the foundation hosted its first Annual Mental Health Community Day in honor of Darius’ birthday. The event brought the community together through connection, conversation, and support, featuring local partners, speakers, and a variety of holistic therapy experiences designed to promote healing and awareness.
Through listening to the needs of the community, Kristi recognized a gap in access to affordable mental health care. In response, the foundation created The Gift of Therapy Program, which currently provides three sponsored therapy sessions each year to selected young adults who are seeking support and may not have access to insurance or financial resources. The foundation also assists individuals in locating providers that best fit their needs.
Kristi continues to build a strong network of therapists, partners, and supporters who share a common mission: to ensure that no one feels alone in their journey. With a growing foundation and a heart rooted in service, she remains dedicated to honoring Darius’ legacy by reminding others that behind every smile is a story and every story deserves to be heard.
